Five individuals were arrested after tensions erupted during a rally at the EDSA People Power Monument on Monday, June 30, following an incident involving a bus that blocked both northbound and southbound lanes of EDSA, authorities said.
Police said the situation escalated when a bus driver allegedly maneuvered the vehicle back and forth along the northbound lane near White Plains, causing disruption and triggering a confrontation between protesters and law enforcement, as reported by RH Jecelle Ricafort.
The rally, reportedly organized by members of a religious group, drew a police response as officers attempted to maintain order in the area.
According to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), one policewoman was pinned during the incident and required immediate medical attention. Authorities further said one of those arrested allegedly assaulted a police officer deployed at the scene.
Initial reports said two individuals were first taken into custody as tensions began to rise. The number of arrests later increased to five, including the bus driver.
NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin said authorities are continuing to assess the situation and ensure public safety following the disturbance.
Meanwhile, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said he is closely monitoring the protest and coordinating with concerned units on the ground.
“The PNP remains on full alert and continues to coordinate with concerned units to ensure peace, order, and the safety of the public,” the PNP said in a statement.
As of writing, police presence remained heightened around the EDSA People Power Monument.
