A commercial building housing 101.5 Love Radio General Santos and 94.3 DZRH News FM collapsed Monday morning after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the city, leaving authorities scrambling to check for possible trapped occupants.
The RD Plaza Building, which serves as the home of both radio stations, gave way shortly after the strong quake hit around 7:37 a.m. on June 8.
DJ Daddy Daks of Love Radio GenSan, speaking on DZRH’s “Damdaming Bayan,” said he and a technical staff member had just managed to escape moments before the structure collapsed.
“On-board ako noong time na yon [ng lindol] then biglang lumakas yung lindol then lumabas kami ng tech ng DZRH,” he said.
“Yung tech ng DZRH [tumumba] sa hagdan [mula] third floor pababa dahil medyo malakas talaga ang lindol. Medyo injured yung paa ko ng konti.”
He said the collapse happened within seconds after they reached safety. “Pagbaba namin, bumabgsak na ang building kasali ang office ng DZRH at Love Radio.”
The DJ added that they were unsure if anyone remained inside, particularly on the lower floors.
“As of now, wala pa kaming alam kung may [naiwan] sa baba [ng building] especially sa first floor kasi sila talaga yung prone ng pagguho,” he said.
Authorities from the Bureau of Fire Protection and police personnel have entered the debris site to conduct search and rescue operations.
“On the rescue ngayon ang Bureau of Fire and may mga pulis din na pumasok [sa building] para i-check yung mga taong naiwan sa loob,” the DJ added.
He also reported multiple aftershocks following the quake, with at least five tremors felt after the main shock.
Officials have yet to confirm casualties. Damage assessments and rescue efforts are continuing as aftershocks rattled the city and its nearby provinces.
