A steel bridge in Purok 5, Sitio Sogong, Barangay Ilawod, Camalig, Albay collapsed on Thursday afternoon, August 28, after it was allegedly traversed by an overloaded truck carrying stones.

According to a resident’s social media post, the truck allegedly exceeded the bridge’s capacity, causing the structure to give way. The incident disrupted traffic and affected residents who rely on the bridge as their main passageway.

Camalig Public Information Office said that the inspection report released by the Municipal Engineering Office (MEO) confirmed that the steel bridge was originally designed to accommodate only light vehicles.

The overloaded truck, classified as a heavy vehicle, exceeded the bridge’s weight limit, resulting in significant structural damage and rendering the bridge unsafe for public use.

According to Camalig PIO, the DPWH will begin repair on Friday, August 29.

The local government has advised the public to avoid using the damaged bridge until repairs are completed. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to take alternative routes for their safety.

Authorities also reminded the public to strictly observe vehicle weight limits and bridge capacity rules to prevent similar incidents in the future.
