Gilas Pilipinas absorbed a heavy 92-49 defeat to Australia on Monday night (PH time) but still advanced to the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Despite the lopsided loss, the Philippines secured its spot in the next phase beginning in August, while Australia completed a dominant Group A sweep with a perfect 6-0 record.

The Boomers seized control early and never looked back, capitalizing on Gilas’ offensive struggles and turnovers.

Australia raced to a 33-14 lead at the end of the first quarter behind a hot start from Bryce Cotton, who nearly matched the Philippines’ output in the opening period alone.

Gilas showed signs of life in the second quarter, tightening its defense and trimming the deficit to as low as 12 points after holding Australia scoreless through much of the period.

June Mar Fajardo led the charge with strong interior play, finishing the half with eight points and seven rebounds as the Filipinos trailed 41-27 at the break.

Any momentum quickly vanished after halftime.

Australia opened the third quarter with renewed energy, punishing Gilas with efficient ball movement and outside shooting while forcing multiple turnovers.

The Philippines went through prolonged scoring droughts and struggled to handle Australia’s pressure defense, falling behind 63-37 entering the fourth.

The Boomers continued to pull away in the final period, stretching the lead to as much as 48 points as Gilas failed to establish any offensive rhythm. The nationals shot just 28 percent from the field, committing 16 turnovers while managing only 10 assists.

Dwight Ramos knocked down a late three-pointer, but it did little to dent the massive deficit.

Gilas also played without naturalized forward Justin Brownlee, who missed the game due to multiple injuries, including a right hamstring strain, peroneal tendinopathy and swelling in his left knee.

Kevin Quiambao, Mike Phillips and AJ Edu provided early sparks, while Fajardo anchored the interior, but the Philippines could not sustain consistent production on either end.

The loss marked a sobering end to the third qualifying window for Gilas, which now shifts its focus to regrouping ahead of the second round in August.
