The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Zamboanga has destroyed over ₱266 million worth of smuggled cigarettes, intensifying its campaign against illegal trade and economic sabotage.
The condemnation activity, held in Barangay Manicahan, Zamboanga City, was led by Enforcement Group Deputy Commissioner Nolasco K. Bathan and District Collector Elenita A. Abaño. The event also carried a message from BOC Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno, emphasizing the government’s firm stance against smuggling.
A total of 5,069 master cases, 2,620 reams, and 32 packs of assorted cigarettes were destroyed after being seized in various enforcement operations for violations of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act and Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act.
Nepomuceno said the destruction goes beyond disposing of illegal goods, calling it a “decisive act of governance,” noting that smuggling undermines government revenue, distorts fair competition, and exposes consumers to unregulated products.
Abaño, meanwhile, stressed that the move reflects the Bureau’s commitment to enforcing customs laws and preventing the spread of illicit goods, adding that the condemned items were destroyed in compliance with legal procedures.
The operation, witnessed by various government and law enforcement agencies, underscores a whole-of-government approach in securing borders and protecting public welfare, while sending a strong warning to those involved in illegal trade.
