The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has seized undeclared foreign currencies amounting to ₱3,762,000, from an arriving passenger at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1, the agency reported.

In a statement relased on Saturday, BOC-NAIA said the full amount of JPY 10 million was initially intercepted during routine inspection. Only JPY 1,560,000, equivalent to USD 10,000, the maximum allowable limit without declaration was returned to the passenger.

The bureau added that the remaining JPY 8,440,000, or about ₱3,175,128, was confiscated after the passenger failed to declare the funds through the government’s e-Travel system.

In its statement, BOC emphasized that transporting undeclared currency violates "Sections 117, 1400, and 1401 of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA)," as well as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ Manual of Regulations on Foreign Exchange Transactions.

BOC-NAIA, led by District Collector Atty. Yasmin Mapa, said it continues to intensify airport inspections in line with the administration’s nationwide campaign against smuggling and the illegal entry of foreign currencies into the country.
