Authorities raised a Blue Alert status in Metro Manila on Thursday, July 9 as preparations intensified for the impact of Typhoon Inday, which is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring heavy rains across the capital.
According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa, the Office of Civil Defense recommended the alert level upgrade, placing all rescue and response personnel on standby. A virtual operations center has also been activated to monitor developments and coordinate emergency responses.
Officials said the heaviest rainfall is expected from Friday through Saturday, with precipitation forecast to reach between 50 to 100 millimeters. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned that the volume of rain could trigger flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Despite the anticipated weather conditions, authorities have not issued a region-wide suspension of classes.
Office of Civil Defense-National Capital Region chief George Keyser said local government units are in a better position to assess conditions in their respective areas.
“Naniniwala ako na yung LGUs ang mas nakakaalam eh doon sa kanilang mga lugar at pangangailan ng kanilang mga constituents,” Keyser said.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes echoed the stance, saying the decision to suspend classes would be left to local officials.
“Ang nangyayari kasi magdedemand yung mga estudyante, mga magulang na isuspend na. Tapos kapag umaraw eh ibabash kami, pinagtatawanan pa na mali,” Artes said.
Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and monitor official advisories as weather conditions may change rapidly.
