The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Friday filed tax evasion complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Sunwest, Inc., a company linked to former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, over an estimated P22.71-billion deficiency income tax liability.

The complaint was filed against Sunwest and its top officers over the company’s alleged failure to pay the correct amount of taxes, according to the BIR.

At around 9 a.m. July 24, BIR personnel arrived at the DOJ carrying around five boxes of documents containing evidence and records related to the complaint, according to a report by RH Tina Nolasco.

The case stemmed from the BIR’s findings of alleged tax violations by Sunwest, including the willful underdeclaration of income, unsupported purchases and expenses, and the improper claiming of creditable withholding tax (CWT) credits covering taxable years 2019 to 2024.

The filing comes amid ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in flood control projects, where Sunwest has been linked to several government infrastructure contracts.

Co, who previously served as House appropriations committee chairperson, has denied allegations of wrongdoing involving the flood control projects and has maintained that Sunwest has complied with government regulations.
