The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Eastern Visayas has destroyed 9,787 disposable illicit vape units in Isabel, Leyte, as part of its ongoing crackdown on tax-evading products, according to BIR Assistant Regional Director Josephine B. Catamco.
Of the total units, 1,579 were retained as evidence for pending legal cases against 53 tax evaders, while the remaining 3% were immediately destroyed. The illicit products are estimated to have caused over ₱30 million in lost government taxes.
The nationwide destruction operation was conducted from October 14, 2024, to November 9, 2025, under strict supervision to ensure transparency. Present during the event were BIR personnel, Commission on Audit (COA) officials, and media representatives, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforcing tax compliance.
Catamco highlighted that the crackdown is part of BIR’s broader effort to curb the proliferation of illegal vape products, which not only evade taxes but also pose health risks to consumers. “This operation sends a strong message that tax evasion will not be tolerated, and illicit trade that harms the public will be addressed decisively,” she said.
Authorities also reminded the public and business owners to ensure all vape products are properly registered and taxed to avoid legal repercussions. The BIR plans to continue similar operations across the region to strengthen compliance and recover lost government revenue.
