Former beauty queen and Binibining Universe 1989 titleholder Sara Jane Paez Santiago has passed away on January 13 at the age of 57.
Her family confirmed the news through a post shared on Santiago’s personal Instagram account on January 15, expressing both grief and faith during this difficult time.
In their message, her loved ones wrote, "It is with heavy hearts that Nicky, Sarina, and Alessio share the passing of Sara Jane. While we grieve deeply, we find comfort in trusting that she is now in God's loving care, at peace, and surrounded by light," followed by, "Thank you for keeping Sara and our family in your prayers.”
The same post also included details regarding the wake, which will be held at Santuario de San Antonio Parish in Forbes Park, Makati.
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from the beauty pageant community. Both the Miss Universe Philippines (MUPH) and the Binibining Pilipinas Organization (BBP) paid tribute to Santiago’s life and legacy.
MUPH recalled Santiago’s role as the Philippines’ representative at the Miss Universe pageant held in Cancun, Mexico, honoring her impact on the international stage. The organization shared, "She carried our country with grace and pride on the international stage, leaving a lasting mark in our pageant history," they said.
Meanwhile, BBP honored her contributions to the pageant world and her reign as Binibining Universe 1989. In their statement, they said, “Thank you for the light you shared and the pride you brought to Binibini. You will always be remembered. Rest in peace.”
One of Santiago’s final television appearances was on the January 24, 2025, episode of Family Feud, where she appeared alongside her husband, Nicky.
