BAYAN worried over Senate handling of VP Duterte's impeachment
by Elijah Gaven Mitra18 May 2026
Progressive group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) said it remains concerned over the Senate’s handling of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, despite welcoming the issuance of a writ of summons by the Senate impeachment court.
BAYAN Secretary-General Mong Palatino said the group fears that senators allied with the Duterte camp could influence the outcome of the proceedings.
“Kami ay nababahala pa rin,” Palatino said, warning that the impeachment process could still be derailed.
He argued that if allies were allegedly able to protect Senator Ronald dela Rosa amid recent controversies, the same political influence could also affect the impeachment case against the vice president.
Palatino said there is still uncertainty on whether the impeachment trial will fully proceed, adding that there are concerns that evidence could be withheld or the process delayed.
He also raised the possibility that even if the impeachment trial pushes through, the Senate may still acquit Duterte.
BAYAN urged the public to continue monitoring the Senate and to ensure that lawmakers respond to public calls for accountability and transparency throughout the impeachment proceedings.
