Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Chief Minister Abdulraof “Sammy Gambar” A. Macacua has called for ethical and responsible journalism, expressing concern over the use of religious identity in reporting a recent criminal case.

In a statement released, Macacua criticized the labeling of an alleged suspect as “Muslim” in connection with the killing of Joanna Infante, an official of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) assigned at Puerto Princesa International Airport. He stressed that religion or ethnicity should not be used to identify individuals when it is irrelevant to the case, warning that such references risk reinforcing harmful stereotypes and fueling discrimination.

Macacua underscored that while the Bangsamoro Government stands firmly for justice for the victim, public discourse must remain fair, balanced, and responsible. He emphasized that the pursuit of accountability should not come at the expense of social cohesion, particularly in a diverse society.

The BARMM chief also noted that media practitioners play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and must exercise care, integrity, and responsibility in their reporting. He urged reflection and constructive dialogue to promote peace-oriented journalism, especially amid sensitive cases that may inflame religious or cultural tensions.

The statement comes amid heightened public attention on the case and renewed calls for accountability, as authorities continue their investigation into the killing.
