The Senate will bring to plenary a proposed measure seeking to postpone the 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections after a Senate committee approved the measure Monday, Aug. 24, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero said.

Escudero said the Senate Committee on Local Government held a hearing Monday where the Commission on Elections, National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections, National Youth Commission, Liga ng mga Barangay, Liga ng mga SK and other organizations presented their positions on the proposed postponement.

Sen. JV Ejercito moved to approve the measure and elevate it to the Senate plenary for further debate.

Escudero, who presided over the hearing as acting subcommittee chairman, approved the motion but said amendments endorsed by various groups would be incorporated into the committee report.

“Subject to the amendments proposed by the parties which the committee shall consider, as well as the points raised by the Comelec with respect to appropriation and the proposed date so that it will not coincide with November 2,” Escudero said.

The Comelec and election watchdogs have pushed for the barangay and SK elections to proceed as scheduled on Nov. 2, 2026, while the proposed five-year term for barangay and SK officials could be discussed separately.

Escudero, however, assured that the recommendations raised by the different groups during the hearing would be included in the committee report for consideration by the full Senate.

The Comelec earlier urged Congress to make an early decision on whether to postpone the elections, citing the approaching Nov. 2 election date and the preparations required for the polls.
