Environmental group BAN Toxics has raised an alarm over potentially hazardous chemicals found in some children’s swimming floaters being sold in local markets, urging parents to be more cautious when purchasing bath and swimming products.

In a recent market monitoring conducted in Metro Manila and Tacloban, the group identified several low-cost kiddie items—including swim rings, beach balls, baby swimming vests, and inflatable floaters—priced between ₱90 and ₱150.

According to BAN Toxics, many of these products lacked proper labeling and essential product information, violating provisions under Republic Act 10620.

Thony Dizon of BAN Toxics revealed that laboratory tests showed some items contained dangerously high levels of lead, exceeding established toy safety standards.

The group also found traces of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in several samples—a chemical linked to serious health concerns such as cancer, asthma, allergies, and potential damage to the reproductive and immune systems, as well as developmental issues in children.

BAN Toxics is now calling for the immediate removal of these products from the market to prevent further exposure. The organization also urged stricter enforcement of safety regulations and encouraged consumers to check labels carefully and avoid purchasing unverified or poorly labeled items.

The warning comes as demand for affordable summer and swimwear rises, highlighting the need for stronger consumer protection and greater awareness to ensure children’s safety.
