Former Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin appeared before the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) at Camp Crame, Quezon City, on Friday morning, June 19.

This is in connection with the ongoing fact-finding investigation of the CIDG into the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, earlier this month.

Baldwin arrived at the CIDG office after being issued a second subpoena, following his failure to personally attend an earlier scheduled proceeding. His legal counsel had appeared on his behalf during the initial subpoena issued last Monday.

The investigation centers on the fatal drownings of Baterbonia and Adili, both members of the Ateneo basketball program under Baldwin’s tenure at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Authorities are conducting a fact-finding process to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Baldwin also failed to appear at a separate scheduled proceeding before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) earlier this week, prompting officials to expect his compliance with a follow-up subpoena. However, NBI said he was expected to attend a rescheduled appearance next week.

In a prior video statement released on Ateneo’s official social media channels days after the incident, Baldwin expressed grief and apologized for the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili.

He later went on leave before formally stepping down as head coach of the Ateneo men’s basketball program.
