Authorities have raised the alert level for Mayon Volcano to Level 2 as of January 1, 2026, after monitoring instruments recorded signs of increasing unrest, signaling a moderate risk of volcanic activity.

The Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMC-APSEMO) said the volcano’s current activity is driven by shallow magmatic processes that could lead to hazardous eruptions. In response, the agency has implemented stricter safety protocols for the public.

Residents and tourists are strictly prohibited from entering the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone, including areas commonly used for mountain climbing, orchid picking, and farming.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) operations are now limited to the Cagsawa Ruins, while the Mayon Skyline and surrounding zones remain closed until further notice. A no-fly zone has also been established above the volcano to prevent aerial risks.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), in coordination with local governments, is responsible for enforcing these restrictions. Meanwhile, city and municipal disaster offices around Mayon have been placed on preparedness and monitoring status to respond quickly in case of escalation.

Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and to follow updates from PHIVOLCS and local authorities to ensure safety as monitoring continues.
