Asia United Bank (AUB) Davao-Toril Branch Manager Arcy James Gonzales on Wednesday confirmed that two active bank accounts at the branch are linked to Atty. Manases “Mans” Carpio, the husband of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Gonzales testified during the 35th day of Duterte’s impeachment trial that a total of four accounts had been linked to the Vice President or her husband at the branch, but only two remain active while the other two have been closed.
“How many accounts does the Vice President or her husband, Atty. Carpio, have in your branch?” Private prosecutor James Bryan Alih asked Gonzales.
“Apat po. Dalawa na lang po ’yung active, the rest closed na po. Some accounts are under Mans Carpio, ’yung isang account po is meron po siyang kasama,” Gonzales replied.
During direct examination, Gonzales confirmed that Carpio has two accounts at the AUB Davao-Toril branch and that Duterte is not a holder of the accounts.
She also provided the year-end balances of the two accounts from 2022 to 2025.
For the account ending in 387, the year-end balances were:
- 2022: ₱314,059.17
- 2023: ₱470,869.30
- 2024: ₱456,352.28
- 2025: ₱0
For the account ending in 301, the year-end balances were:
- 2022: ₱1,682,094.22
- 2023: ₱1,774,663.58
- 2024: ₱867,291.90
- 2025: ₱871,998.77
Gonzales clarified that her knowledge of the accounts and their transactions was based on bank records and that she had no personal knowledge of the purpose of the transactions or the underlying agreements.
During cross-examination by defense counsel Roberto Batungbacal, Gonzales confirmed that the bank had not found anything irregular with the transactions.
Senator-judge Vicente “Tito” Sotto III also asked Gonzales about the identity of the other individual named as a co-holder of one of Carpio’s accounts.
“Sabi niya kanina, ’yung isang account kay Atty. Carpio, and another account kay Atty. Carpio and another person. Sino ’yung other person?” Sotto asked.
Gonzales declined to identify the individual, saying the person’s name was not covered by the subpoena, saying, “‘'Yung name po hindi po sakop sa subpoena.”
“It’s not the Vice President?” Sotto asked.
“Yes po,” Gonzales replied.
The testimony formed part of the House prosecution’s presentation of bank representatives in connection with allegations of unexplained wealth against Duterte under Article II of the impeachment complaint.
Following Gonzales’ testimony, Alih said the prosecution would dispense with two other AUB witnesses because the accounts covered by their testimony, involving the bank’s Davao-Tagum and Ortigas-Greenhills branches, had already been closed.
