Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto Yap appeared at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday in response to subpoenas issued by its Homicide Division in connection with the deaths of two Ateneo basketball players.
According to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort, Fr. Yap personally submitted documents sought under a subpoena ad testificandum and subpoena duces tecum related to the deaths of Ateneo cagers Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
The NBI said Yap’s appearance followed an earlier visit on June 19 by two of his lawyers, who made a courtesy call and informed investigators that the university president would present himself this week. Yap was unable to attend earlier proceedings due to a graduation ceremony.
The NBI expects to complete its investigation by Friday and submit its findings to the Department of Justice for review and possible filing of charges.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag assured the victims’ families of a fair and thorough probe, saying authorities would hold accountable those identified by the evidence.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) earlier said around 10 to 11 individuals could face charges, but the NBI has declined to confirm details pending completion of its investigation.
