The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) will continue the suspension of regular academic classes next week as the university adjusts its learning arrangements following the fatal shooting at its Junior High School campus on August 18, 2026.

University President Fr. Ernald Andal, SJ, said there will be no regular academic classes for Grade School and Junior High School from August 24 to 28 as the university prioritizes the well-being and safety of its students and personnel.

Instead, students will participate in alternative learning arrangements and non-academic activities, with activities scheduled from September 1 to 4.

For Senior High School, faculty and staff will use Monday, August 24, for preparations. An online meeting with parents and guardians will also be held on Tuesday to discuss the arrangements for students.

Students are expected to attend shortened online sessions on Thursday, followed by online classes on Friday.

The university will likewise suspend regular academic classes in higher education from August 24 to 28. During the period, students and personnel will participate in scheduled in-person support activities, guided reflection, and pastoral care.

Andal said individual academic units will directly communicate specific schedules and arrangements to students, parents, and guardians to ensure that the transition to alternative learning activities is properly coordinated.

The university will also continue providing psychological first aid and other support services to students, families, faculty, and personnel who may need assistance following the shooting incident.

The temporary adjustments come as AdZU continues to address the aftermath of the August 18 shooting, which resulted in the deaths of two students and left another individual injured.

Andal said the university’s support initiatives will continue alongside its cooperation with investigators and its ongoing review of campus security measures.

The university’s decision to maintain alternative learning arrangements reflects its continuing efforts to provide students and personnel with time and support to cope with the incident while ensuring that academic activities can gradually resume under appropriate conditions.
