Short-lived lava fountaining and minor strombolian activity were recorded at Mayon Volcano on Sunday, March 22, as its ongoing eruption continued for the 77th consecutive day, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Based on time-lapse footage from the Mayon Volcano Observatory and photos from the DOST-PHIVOLCS Quick Response Team, a brief lava fountaining event occurred at around 5:20 a.m. This was followed by minor strombolian activity at 9:14 a.m. and 9:23 a.m.

The events produced grayish ash plumes that rose up to 800 meters before drifting toward the north-northwest to west direction.

PHIVOLCS said the effusive eruption of Mayon remains ongoing, generating hazards such as incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally known as “uson,” and rockfalls.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over the volcano. Entry into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden explosive activity and other volcanic hazards.
