Archie Comics has officially reintroduced Scarlet Saltee, a Filipino-Irish character, now explicitly written as a teen with autism in the Riverdale comic universe, marking a renewed push for inclusive and issue-driven storytelling.

The character, who has already appeared in previous storylines, is being repositioned with a clearer narrative focus on neurodiversity and representation.

The update comes during National Autism Acceptance Month, underscoring the company’s continued effort to highlight real-world social issues through its long-running comic franchise.

Scarlet Saltee was created under Archie Comics co-CEO Nancy Silberkleit, a former educator who has advocated for using graphic storytelling as a tool for awareness and classroom engagement.

She said the character’s Filipino-Irish identity was inspired by her visit to Manila in 2018, where she met fans who called for broader representation in Archie publications.

Silberkleit said Scarlet’s stories are designed not only to reflect autism but also to encourage conversations around inclusion, bullying, and friendship.

“The intention is to open dialogue in a way that feels natural for readers,” she said, adding that humor remains part of the storytelling approach even when addressing serious themes.

Scarlet’s autism storyline is expected to be further developed in upcoming Riverdale issues, alongside a series of short arcs exploring her experiences in school and social settings.

The reintroduction reflects Archie Comics’ ongoing shift toward more socially relevant narratives, blending classic teen storytelling with contemporary issues such as mental health, identity, and accessibility.

While some longtime readers have debated the franchise’s evolving tone, the company continues to emphasize balance between entertainment and awareness-driven content.
