The Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese has expressed strong opposition to plans to construct a nuclear power plant in Labrador, Pangasinan, emphasizing that public safety and welfare should take precedence over economic gains.
In a pastoral letter led by Archbishop Socrates Villegas, the Archdiocese underscored the principle of prioritizing life and public welfare over financial gain.
The statement reflects the Church’s concern over the potential risks posed by nuclear energy to the local community.
The proposed nuclear facility is being pushed by 2nd District Congressman Mark Cojuangco, who has claimed that most residents and local officials in Labrador support the project.
However, opposition has grown among local fishermen and other community members who fear adverse effects on their livelihoods.
The Archdiocese identified four main reasons for opposing the project: vulnerability to disasters, the problem of irreversible nuclear waste, the need to prioritize renewable energy, and putting human life above efficiency.
The pastoral letter called for greater investment in renewable energy, stating, “We must invest heavily in renewable energy infrastructure that ensures safety, resilience, and true long-term development for our people.”
