Apple has introduced Digital ID, a new feature allowing U.S. users to create an ID in Apple Wallet using their passport information. Initially, the feature will be available in beta at TSA checkpoints in over 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel identity verification.

Digital ID enables users without a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID to securely store and present an ID on their iPhone or Apple Watch. However, it cannot replace a physical passport for international travel.

Users set up a Digital ID by scanning their passport, reading its embedded chip, and completing a facial verification process. Once verified, the ID can be presented via Apple Wallet with Face ID or Touch ID authentication, ensuring privacy and security. Only necessary information is shared, and Apple cannot track when or where the ID is used.

The feature follows Apple’s 2022 rollout of adding driver’s licenses and state IDs to Wallet and will expand to additional businesses and organizations for identity and age verification in the future.

Currently, Apple Wallet supports digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in 12 states and Puerto Rico, with recent expansions to Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Japan.

Apple is yet to announce the extension of its new feature in the Philippines.
