Various transport groups are set to stage another nationwide transport strike and mass protest on April 21, citing the ongoing global oil crisis and the government’s alleged inaction on their demands.

According to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort, Piston National Coordinator Cerilo Latoreno told DZRH News, the protest will not only take place in Metro Manila but will also be carried out in several parts of the country.

“Bago mag-Labor Day kail`angan magkaroon ng pambansang pagkilos,” Latoreno said.

More than 4,000 drivers in Metro Manila alone are expected to participate in the large-scale protest, he added.

Latoreno emphasized that President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has yet to respond to their previous transport strikes, particularly on their calls to suspend the excise tax on diesel and the value-added tax (VAT) on oil products.

“Noong dalawang strike namin noong Monday wala namang tugon si BBM. Yung tugon ni BBM ‘yung liquid petroleum lang ang inalis na tax pero yung excise tax at VAT hindi naman tinanggal at yung oil deregulation law. Kaya magtutuloy-tuloy ang aming pagkilos,” he said.

The transport leader also expressed frustration over what he described as oil companies continuing to profit while drivers struggle to make a living.

“Nananawagan po dahil kumita na sila sa tatlong buwan imbak nila na ibinenta na nila na napakamahal, dahil kumita na sila tapos mag-aangkat dapat ibalik nila sa 55 ‘yung roolback ng presyo ng diesel kasi kumita na sila,” he said.

Latoreno added that despite recent fuel price rollbacks, drivers have yet to feel any significant relief in their daily earnings.

The group is urging the government to take immediate action by lowering fuel prices to ₱55 per liter and scrapping the Oil Deregulation Law, which they claim is being exploited by oil companies.
