Fifteen-year-old Alexsandra Ann Diaz powered the Philippines to a historic start at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships, smashing two youth world records and sweeping three gold medals in the women’s 48kg division.

Diaz, niece of the country’s first Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, dominated in record-breaking fashion, eclipsing the global youth standards in the clean and jerk and total categories.

Competing on the opening day, Diaz lifted 98 kilograms in the clean and jerk and posted a total of 175 kilograms, both new youth world records. She also secured gold in the snatch to complete a triple-gold performance.

Her victory underscored the Philippines’ continued rise on the আন্তর্জাতিক weightlifting stage following its breakthrough success in recent years.

Another Filipina lifter, Althea Bacaro, also delivered a podium finish in the women’s 44kg category. Bacaro captured silver in the clean and jerk with an 80-kilogram lift and added a bronze medal in total with 140 kilograms.

Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella said the strong showing is part of the country’s long-term buildup for major international competitions.

“This is in preparation for the Asian Games and, ultimately, the Olympics. That is why we compete against the best in the world,” Puentevella said.

The championships continue this week, with more Filipino athletes set to compete.
