Alex Eala’s maiden singles campaign at the Australian Open may have ended earlier than hoped, but the Filipina trailblazer walked off the Melbourne court having shown exactly why her name continues to rise on the WTA radar.

Facing American Alycia Parks, Eala—ranked No. 49 in the world—opened the match in stunning fashion, dismantling the WTA No. 99 with a ruthless 6–0 first-set performance.

Calm, precise, and fearless on return, Eala dictated the tempo early, showcasing the composure that has defined her steady climb in the rankings.

But Grand Slam tennis has a way of demanding constant reinvention. Parks regrouped in the second set, leaning on her power and experience to flip the script. Eala fought to stay in the exchanges, yet Parks edged ahead, taking the set 6–3 to force a decider.

The momentum carried into the third, where Parks maintained control in the longer rallies and closed out the match, 6–2, ending Eala’s singles debut at Melbourne Park.

The final scoreline—6–0, 3–6, 2–6—told the story of a contest that swung sharply after an explosive opening set.

While the singles chapter closes, Eala’s Australian Open journey is far from over. She returns to the court in doubles, partnering with Brazil’s Ingrid Martins in a first-round clash against the pairing of Magda Linette and Shuko Aoyama on Tuesday, January 20.

The doubles draw offers Eala another chance to gain valuable Grand Slam minutes and test her all-court game on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

Beyond Melbourne, the calendar remains packed with opportunity. Eala is set to receive a wild card into the main draw of the first-ever Philippine Women’s Open on January 26—a landmark event that brings elite women’s tennis to home soil and places her at the center of local expectations.

Soon after, she is listed in the qualifying tournament of the Abu Dhabi Open, with the main draw beginning on February 1, 2026.
