Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala continues her steady ascent on the global stage, rising to a career-high World No. 31 in the latest WTA singles rankings released Monday, February 23.
The 20-year-old achieved the milestone following a quarterfinal finish at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she performed one of the challenging matches of her young career.
Eala stunned World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 32 with a commanding 6-1, 7-6(5) victory, showcasing poise and maturity beyond her years. The win marked another statement performance for the Filipina standout, who has been steadily closing the gap against the sport’s elite.
Her impressive run, however, came to an end in the quarterfinals after facing World No. 4 Coco Gauff, who secured a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Despite the setback, Eala’s deep tournament finish earned her valuable ranking points, propelling her into the Top 35 for the first time in her career.
With momentum on her side, Eala now shifts her focus to the prestigious BNP Paribas Open, set from March 4 to 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Southern California. The tournament, often dubbed the “fifth Grand Slam,” presents another opportunity for Eala to test herself against the world’s best.
Following Indian Wells, she is also scheduled to compete at the Miami Open from March 17 to 29, continuing a crucial stretch in the WTA calendar.
From breaking into the Top 100 to now knocking on the door of the Top 30, Eala’s climb signals that Philippine tennis has a rising star firmly establishing her place among the sport’s brightest names — and at just 20 years old, the best may still be ahead.
