Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala delivered another dazzling performance on the big stage, stunning sixth seed Jasmine Paolini to march into the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, February 17 (Manila time).
Eala showcased poise and power in hacking out a 6-1, 7-6(7) victory over the world No. 8 and 6th seed Italian in the Round of 32, marking her third career win over a top-10 opponent. The 20-year-old Filipina dominated the opening set before surviving a tense second-set tiebreak to seal the straight-sets triumph.
The win further cements Eala’s growing reputation as a giant-slayer on the WTA Tour, as she continues to hold her own against some of the sport’s biggest names.
Next up for Eala is a rematch against world No. 32 Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the Round of 16. Cirstea advanced after dispatching 14th seed Linda Noskova, 6-1, 6-4.
The Pinay tennis star first battled against Romania’s Cirstea in 2024 in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain where Eala fell short against the latter.
The Romanian veteran brings a wealth of experience into the clash, having captured four singles and six doubles titles on the WTA Tour. Their highly anticipated encounter is scheduled for February 19 at 12:30 a.m. (Philippine time), subject to change.
Despite facing higher-ranked opponents, Eala continues to draw strength from the growing support she receives abroad — especially from the Filipino community.
“The stadium was so full tonight, I looked up at one point and there was Filipinos for days, it’s such a blessing to be able to play in those sorts of atmospheres,” Eala said after the match.
“I’m thankful that I’m able to introduce this sport to a new demographic and you can tell they are really enjoying it so I hope it inspires people to pick up rackets.”
With momentum on her side and confidence surging, Eala now sets her sights on another breakthrough performance as she attempts to book a quarterfinal berth in Dubai.
