From zero to hero, Alex Eala authored another breakout chapter in her young career.
Filipino tennis standout Alex Eala dug deep to outlast world No. 109 Aliaksandra Sasnovich in a gripping three-set battle at the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open on Wednesday, February 4, booking a spot in the quarterfinals.
Eala dropped the opening set, 2–6, after struggling to contain Sasnovich’s early aggression from the baseline. The 20-year-old, however, steadily found her rhythm in the second set, improving her serve placement and extending rallies to level the match with a 6–4 win.
The deciding set turned into a dramatic showdown, with Sasnovich surging to a four-point lead and appearing on the verge of closing out the match.
Eala refused to fold, capitalizing on a string of costly double faults from the Belarusian to swing the momentum in her favor. Riding renewed confidence off her serve and forehand, Eala forced a tiebreak and sealed the comeback with a 7–6(5) victory.
With the 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(5) win, Eala advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will face world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova on Thursday, February 5.
Eala will also return to action in doubles, teaming up once again with Indonesian partner Janice Tjen. The pair are set to battle the experienced duo of Cristina Bucsa and Shuai Zhang in the doubles quarterfinals, also scheduled for Thursday.
