Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala battled through a tough three-set match to secure her first-ever main draw victory at the Italian Open, defeating Poland’s Magdalena Fręch, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, in the Round of 128 in Rome.
Playing before a packed crowd at the Pietrangeli Court, Eala showed composure and grit in a contest that lasted more than two hours on clay. The 20-year-old Filipina recovered from an early deficit in the deciding set, rallying from 2-0 and 0-30 down before eventually taking control late in the match.
Eala dominated the opening set with a commanding 6-0 performance, but Fręch, currently ranked World No. 45, answered back in the second set to force a decider. The final set turned into a physical and emotional battle, with both players drawing loud support from fans inside the historic venue.
The victory marked a breakthrough moment for Eala as she claimed her first win in Rome at the WTA 1000 level. Her resilience and steady play on clay proved crucial against the experienced Polish standout.
With the win, World No. 42 Eala advances to the Round of 64, where she will face China’s Wang Xinyu, currently ranked World No. 33.
