Filipina tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala and Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok marched into the quarterfinals of the Guangzhou Open women’s doubles after a straight-sets victory over China’s Tang Qianhui and Britain’s Emily Appleton, 6–4, 6–2, on Thursday.

The Filipino-Ukrainian duo displayed strong teamwork and consistency throughout the match, breaking their opponents multiple times and maintaining control from start to finish.

Their win marks Eala’s return to form after an earlier singles loss to Claire Liu earlier in the tournament.

“Alex and Nadiia to the Guangzhou Open quarterfinals!” the SEAG Network said in a Facebook post.

Eala and Kichenok will next face the Russian pair of Polina Kudermetova and Kamilla Rakhimova in Friday’s quarterfinals.

The victory is especially significant for Eala, whose last doubles appearance was four months ago alongside Germany’s Eva Lys, ending in a loss to the American-Brazilian team of Gleason and Martins.

Earlier this week, the 20-year-old Filipino tennis prodigy achieved a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 53 and is projected to rise to No. 52 in the live rankings.
