Alex Eala made history Tuesday, becoming the first Filipina to win a main-draw match at Wimbledon after a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over Renata Zarazua, early Thursday (PH Time).
The 29th-seeded Eala needed just 78 minutes to dispatch Zarazua on the grass courts of the All England Club, showcasing sharp returns and steady baseline play in her tournament debut.
Eala, who is also the first Filipina to be seeded in a Grand Slam main draw, controlled the match from the outset. She broke Zarazua early in both sets and won five straight games in the opener to take a commanding 6-1 lead.
In the second set, Eala maintained her momentum, building a 5-1 advantage before closing out the match at 6-2.
The 21-year old athlete showed composure throughout, repeatedly jumping ahead in service games, including multiple 40-0 leads, while capitalizing on break-point opportunities to keep Zarazua on the defensive.
Eala will next face world No. 45 Maya Joint in the second round. Joint advanced after defeating former world No. 1 Serena Williams in her opening match.
The win marks another milestone for Eala, widely regarded as one of the Philippines’ brightest tennis prospects, as she continues her rise on the international stage.
