Philippine tennis sensation Alex Eala stamped her authority at the Philippine Women’s Open on Wednesday night, January 28, defeating Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume 6-4, 6-0 in the Round of 16.
World No. 49 Eala showcased her poise and consistency throughout the match. The first set was tightly contested, with both players exchanging holds of serve and testing each other’s limits.
Eala managed to seize the crucial moments, breaking Sakatsume’s serve in three consecutive games to claim the set. She saved two of four break points against her while limiting Sakatsume to converting just one of seven opportunities.
The second set, however, belonged entirely to Eala. She dominated from the outset, dismantling Sakatsume’s rhythm and cruising to a 6-0 set to seal her victory.
With this win, Eala advances to the quarterfinals, where she will face Colombian Camila Osorio on Thursday, January 29, setting up an exciting clash between two top contenders.
Eala’s performance reaffirms her status as one of Asia’s rising tennis stars and gives Filipino fans plenty to cheer about as the tournament progresses.
