Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala has advanced directly to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open after receiving a first-round bye as one of the tournament’s top 32 seeded players.

Eala secured the automatic berth following her career-high rise into the top 32 of the WTA rankings released on February 23.

The 20-year-old standout continues to make history for Philippine tennis, earning a coveted seed in one of the most prestigious tournaments outside the four Grand Slams.

The BNP Paribas Open, held annually in Indian Wells, California, is widely regarded as the “Fifth Grand Slam” due to its elite field and stature on the professional circuit.

This year’s edition runs from March 1 to 15, with Eala scheduled to make her Women’s Singles campaign debut in the second round on March 6.

Eala will be competing alongside the world’s best, including World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who aims to finally capture the Indian Wells crown after runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2025.

World No. 2 Iga Świątek is also in the hunt, seeking her third title in the desert following triumphs in 2022 and 2024.

Meanwhile, Russia’s World No. 8 Mirra Andreeva returns to defend her title, adding even more firepower to an already stacked draw.

For Eala, the first-round bye not only provides valuable rest but also highlights her rapid ascent in the professional ranks. As she steps onto the Indian Wells stage, the young Filipina carries both momentum and national pride, eager to prove she belongs among the sport’s elite.
