Ariel Joseph Alegarbes captured the Philippines’ second gold medal at the 5th Asian Para Games on Tuesday, Oct. 20, winning the men’s 100-meter backstroke S14 in 1 minute, 1.56 seconds.

Alegarbes delivered a strong performance in the pool to secure the gold medal, adding to the Philippines’ growing medal haul at the continental multisport event.

Meanwhile, fellow Filipino para swimmer Ernie Gawilan claimed silver in the men’s 200-meter individual medley SM7, clocking 2:52.72.

Gawilan’s podium finish followed his earlier gold medal at the Games, giving him two medals and strengthening the Philippine para swimming team’s campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.

As of Wednesday press time, the Philippines had collected four medals at the Games, including two golds, one silver and one bronze, all from para swimming.

The Philippines ranked 15th in the overall medal standings, according to the official medal tally.

The 5th Asian Para Games is being held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, bringing together athletes with disabilities from across Asia to compete in various sports.
