Authorities in Albay held an emergency coordination meeting on Monday afternoon to assess the situation of Mayon Volcano, following reports of increased volcanic activity under Alert Level 2, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The meeting was led by Albay Governor Noel Rosal and attended by the Regional and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices, local chief executives, the police, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other government agencies. PHIVOLCS presented the latest monitoring data on Mayon’s condition at the Albay Provincial Operations Center in Legazpi City.
Governor Rosal ordered continuous monitoring of communities within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), warning that authorities are preparing for a possible Alert Level 3 escalation. This could prompt the evacuation of more than 3,000 residents in parts of Sto. Domingo, Tabaco, Daraga, Camalig, and Guinobatan.
Officials said preparedness and response measures are being strengthened to ensure zero casualties, as the province remains on heightened alert amid Mayon’s ongoing unrest.
