The Akbayan Party-list is pushing for more accessible menstrual hygiene products in the country through the “Free Period Products” Bill.
House Bill No. 5179, or the Free Period Products Act, aims to provide girls and women with free and more accessible menstrual hygiene products in public schools and health centers in the country.
“The State recognizes the role of women in nation-building and shall therefore protect and promote their empowerment. The State also recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and promotes and protects their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being,” its declaration policy read.
In pursuit of the policy, the State is required to provide girls and women with proper menstrual health and hygiene. This includes education and products that are safe, affordable, and accessible.
The bill was introduced by Akbayan Representatives Dadah Kiram Ismula, Jose Manuel Tadeo “Chel” Diokno, Percival “Percy” Cendaña, and Dinagat Islands Rep. Kaka Bag-ao.
It was filed on Tuesday, based on Rep. Ismula’s social media post.
