The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Agusan del Sur has approved a resolution honoring the contributions of late student-athlete Rene Clert “Bobet” N. Baterbonia to basketball, posthumously recognizing him as an “Agsurnon Sports Icon.”
The resolution also confers upon Baterbonia the Datu Lipus Makapandong Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements, exemplary contributions to basketball, and for bringing honor and pride to the province.
Baterbonia was one of two student-athletes from Ateneo de Manila University who died due to drowning on June 8 during a team-building event in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Provincial officials cited Baterbonia’s accomplishments, dedication to sportsmanship and role in elevating Agusan del Sur’s profile in national and international competitions.
They described him as a symbol of excellence, perseverance, discipline and service, and an inspiration to future generations of athletes.
Alongside the recognition, the provincial government has ordered the retirement of jersey number 2, which Baterbonia wore during his playing career.
The number will no longer be issued or worn in Governor’s Cup games and other basketball tournaments organized or sanctioned by the provincial government.
The resolution further directs that Baterbonia’s life, achievements and legacy be permanently recorded in the province’s history as an enduring example for Agusanon athletes.
Officials said Baterbonia’s sudden death brought widespread grief across the province, with residents remembering him as a source of hope and inspiration in the local sports community.
