AGAP Party-list Representative Nicanor Briones, through his legal counsel, denied having any flood control projects or receiving kickbacks, as he faced the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) on Monday, December 15, RH Jecelle Ricafort reports.
In an ambush interview, Briones’ lawyer, Atty. Winston Ginez, said the lawmaker submitted an affidavit of denial to the commission and voluntarily appeared to clear his name.
Ginez described the allegations raised by the Discaya spouses against Briones as unfair and unfounded.
“Regarding naman sa allegation ay Congressman Briones took this opportunity para po ma-clear ang kanyang pangalan at to deny all the unfair and unfounded accusations against him by the spouses this time. Nasabi naman po niya lahat na siya ay walang kinalaman at wala siyang alam,” Ginez told reporters.
The lawyer emphasized that Briones has no flood control projects and said the lawmaker only submitted documents requested by the commission.
“[Nag] submit lang po kami ng mga ibang dokumento na kayaan. Wala po siyang flood control [project],” Ginez said.
Ginez added that Briones would no longer return to the ICI, noting that his client only intended to assist the investigation.
After his appearance, Briones declined to answer questions from members of the media.
Briones concluded his requested executive session with the ICI at around 11:30 a.m. and maintained a “no comment” stance afterward.
Meanwhile, ICI Chairman Andres Reyes refused to confirm or deny reports of the possible resignation of Commissioner Rossana Fajardo.
Earlier, former ICI special adviser and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said that another commissioner was expected to resign.
Magalong himself has stepped down from his post, while Commissioner Babes Singson also resigned effective December 15.
