The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured the public that it is monitoring the impeachment complaints filed against the country’s two highest-ranking officials, according to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa on Damdaming Bayan.
In a press conference in Camp Aguinaldo, AFP Public Affairs Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad emphasized that the military respects the democratic process and remains non-partisan.
“Tandaan po natin na hindi lang naman ang Vice President, I think the different groups filed and exercised their democratic rights under the constitution, which is allowed under our law. Let us observe that and think of us to…as regards civil address, the armed forces will always be in support of our PNP counterpart,” Trinidad said.
However, the AFP is prepared to respond to any consequences arising from the impeachment proceedings, particularly regarding the actions of political supporters.
This statement came after the United People’s Initiative (UPI) warned that the attempt to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte could trigger civil unrest.
Trinidad noted that the AFP is already working alongside the Philippine National Police (PNP), which provides security during demonstrations and other similar activities.
As of now, Commander-in-Chief President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. remains unthreatened by the impeachment, while the Vice President is facing three separate impeachment complaints.
