The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday opened part of Camp Aguinaldo to the public for a community mural activity highlighting the West Philippine Sea (WPS), in line with the observance of Araw ng Kagitingan.
The mural, located along Bonny Serrano Avenue in front of the AFP General Headquarters, forms part of the WPS Mural Festival 2026, an initiative that gathers artists for a symbolic art event centered on national sovereignty and maritime awareness.
Festival director and lead artist AG Saño said AFP Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr. offered the wall outside the military headquarters for the project, citing its visibility to thousands of motorists passing the busy thoroughfare daily.
The initiative aims to raise public awareness on the country’s assertion and protection of its territorial waters, which serve as a vital resource for Filipino fishermen.
Film director Baby Ruth Villarama, who also attended the event, underscored the role of art in amplifying advocacy efforts related to the WPS issue. She cited challenges faced in promoting her documentary, which she said encountered alleged restrictions linked to China.
Around 80 artists are participating in the WPS Mural Festival, organizers said. The community mural space in front of the AFP headquarters remains open to the public until 5 p.m., inviting individuals to paint and express support for the country’s maritime cause.
