The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) monitored a total of 41 Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) during the first week of 2026, nearly double the previous monthly average of 25, military officials said.

RH Edniel Parrosa reports that according to AFP spokesperson for the WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent T. Trinidad, PN, the increase is being closely observed but stressed that it is still too early to raise alarm over the figures.

“They are already illegal within our EEZ, but compared to the data we have, these are still in the normal numbers that we monitor,” Trinidad said during a briefing at Camp Aguinaldo.

Despite this, officials noted that the presence reflects what the AFP has described as the “integration” of China’s People’s Liberation Army, Coast Guard, and maritime militia—an operational pattern observed by Philippine forces over the past year.

The Chinese vessels were reportedly seen approaching key areas in the WPS, including Bajo de Masinloc (Panatag Shoal), Pag-asa Island, Ayungin Shoal, and Escoda Shoal.

On January 12, a Filipino fishing vessel experienced what authorities described as harassment by Chinese vessels in Panatag Shoal, marking the first such incident reported in 2026.

In response, the AFP said it has contingency plans in place and continues to enhance its presence in the WPS through increased patrols, joint activities with allies, and the acceleration of its military modernization program.
