The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Sunday commended the successful civilian-led “Atin Ito” mission to Pag-asa Island, highlighting its significance despite the presence of a Chinese naval vessel in the area.

AFP spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Adm. Roy Vincent Trinidad, said the mission went beyond symbolism after participants were able to raise the Philippine flag on Sandy Cay 2.

“It reinforces the truth that the West Philippine Sea is not just a strategic maritime area, but an integral part of our national heritage and livelihood,” Trinidad said.

The Atin Ito coalition managed to reach Sandy Cay 2 via jet skis despite what it described as intimidation and blocking maneuvers by a People’s Liberation Army Navy Jiangkai II-class frigate with hull number 525.

According to the group, the Chinese warship approached as close as 1,000 yards to one of its vessels, ML Chowee, which was about two nautical miles from Pag-asa Island.

The coalition also reported being tailed by three China Coast Guard vessels during the mission.

Trinidad emphasized the importance of the West Philippine Sea not only for national security but also for Filipino fishermen and communities in the municipality of Kalayaan, noting that the area remains within Philippine territory.
