The Ateneo de Davao Senior High School covered court in Bangkal, Davao City will be renamed after former student-athlete Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia, the university president announced on Sunday, June 14.
During a mass on the final night of the wake held at the university for Baterbonia, Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) President Fr. Karel S. San Juan said that the covered court inside the SHS campus will be officially named the Rene ‘Bobet’ Baterbonia Covered Court (RBBCC) as a tribute to the late student-athlete.
“Gagawin po namin pangalan ng covered courts, RBBCC. Ano ibig sabihin ng RBBCC? Rene Bobet Baterbonia Covered Courts,” Fr. San Juan said.
He added that the facility will also display photos of Baterbonia and will remain open for visits by his family.
The Ateneo de Davao Senior High School renamed the court at its Bangkal Campus in Davao City to the Rene Baterbonia 'Bobet' Covered Court (RBBCC) and officially retired his No. 2 jersey.
Aside from naming the covered court in his honor, the university also extended full scholarship support up to college for the six siblings of Baterbonia.
Baterbonia, along with Nigerian student-athlete Divine Adili, died in a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Aurora.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at around 2:40 p.m. during an activity attended by approximately 20 participants.
Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has created a special task force to conduct a deeper inquiry into the incident.
Earlier, Aurora provincial authorities said initial findings showed no indication of foul play and described the incident as a "purely accidental" drowning.
Authorities also said that a post-mortem examination certificate identified asphyxia due to drowning as the cause of death of both athletes.
