The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the West Philippine Sea (WPS) on the ninth anniversary of the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).
“Nine years ago today, the world listened and sided with the truth,” the AFP began its statement, highlighting that the PCA upheld the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the WPS on July 12, 2016.
AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. wrote that it was more than a legal ruling but a recognition of “what every Filipino has long held in their heart — that these waters, resources, and legacy — are rightfully ours.”
“The West Philippine Sea is not just a line on a map. It is a lifeline. It feeds our people, secures our borders, and speaks of our dignity as a nation,” Brawner wrote, emphasizing the AFP’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding the WPS.
According to the Chief of Staff, Filipino soldiers, sailors, and airmen stand watch every day to patrol the skies and guard the waters. He added that these individuals work closely with government agencies to ensure the safety of fisherfolks and to protect the maritime domain.
“This mission is not just ours. It is shared with every Filioino. And we draw strength from your trust and support. Because when the Filipino people are united, we are unstoppable,” the statement read. “Let us remember what we defend today, we pass on to the next generation. The West Philippine Sea is part of our inheritance. It is our duty to protect it with courage, wisdom, and unity.”
“Together, with the full strength and unwavering commitment of the AFP, we protect not just our waters — but our pride, our rights, and our children’s future,” it added.
