The much-anticipated 4th Philippine Book Festival officially opened its doors to the public on Thursday, March 12, at the Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall.

The annual event, a celebration of Philippine literature and creativity, runs until Sunday, March 15. This year, the festival carries the theme “Gubat ng Karunungan” (Forest of Knowledge), designed to guide visitors through a journey of learning, imagination, and storytelling.

The opening ceremony gathered a diverse group of attendees, including NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, local publishers, authors, illustrators, educators, and industry stakeholders.

Their presence highlighted the growing importance of books and reading in the country’s cultural and educational landscape.

At the ceremony, Secretary Angara emphasized the role of books, particularly local literature, in shaping young minds. “Books are a different world altogether for children,” he said, underlining how reading nurtures knowledge, imagination, and empathy.

He also noted the significance of fostering learning, especially amid global challenges like the turmoil in the Middle East and pressing issues at home.

The festival is divided into four distinct areas, each offering a unique literary experience:

  • Aral Aklat – Showcasing books as tools for learning and discovery, featuring textbooks, teaching guides, and educational materials.

  • Booktopia – A celebration of Filipino fiction and nonfiction, highlighting the richness and diversity of local literature.

  • Kid Lit – An interactive, child-friendly zone designed to engage young readers through playful learning experiences.

  • Komiks – A visual feast dedicated to Filipino comics and graphic storytelling, honoring the country’s vibrant illustration culture.
