Nine police officers from Navotas have been relieved from their duties following allegations that they tortured two murder suspects in connection with a November 3 incident.
During a press conference at Camp Crame, PNP Spokesperson PBGEN Randulf T. Tuaño said the officers were transferred to a "floating" status at the district level while the case is being investigated.
According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa in dzRH's Damdaming Bayan, originally, eight officers were accused, but authorities have also included the chief investigator of the Navotas Police Station in the investigation due to alleged inaction.
The officers are facing complaints related to grave misconduct, serious irregularity in performance of duty, conduct unbecoming of a police officer, and violations of the Anti-Torture Act.
The PNP-Internal Affairs Service (IAS), led by Atty. Brigido J. Dulay is currently heading the investigation, with the National Police Commission (Napolcom) conducting a parallel probe.
According to the suspects' lawyer, the accused officers allegedly bound the suspects’ hands and feet and physically assaulted them.
Reports also claim that the suspects were hooded and coerced into admitting involvement in the November 3 shooting.
The Navotas City Police Station initially denied the allegations, labeling them as harassment.
However, the PNP-IAS said that the complaints are being taken seriously and are under thorough investigation.
