Five men were arrested in Quiapo, Manila, for allegedly selling expired food products worth an estimated ₱950,000, authorities said.
Police Col. Edward Samonte said authorities acted on information from an asset about the alleged widespread sale of expired food items in the area. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of the questionable goods.
The Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Manila, through its Special Mayor’s Reaction Team (SmaRT), immediately moved to intervene after receiving reports of the operation, citing possible risks to public health.
In a video statement, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso said the city government will not tolerate any activity that puts the health of our residents at risk.
“Delikado ito sa kalusugan natin. Maaaring tayo ay nakakamura at mukhang mura pero hindi lahat ng mura ay maganda,” Moreno added, warning the public about the dangers of purchasing low-cost but unsafe food products.
He also said investigators have “positively identified” the alleged leader of the group, who is reportedly based in Makati, and that follow-up operations are being prepared.
Authorities said the confiscated items are undergoing inspection to determine the extent of public health risks and possible violations of food safety regulations.
