The death toll from the MV June Aster tragedy in Coron, Palawan, has risen to 76 after authorities recovered 41 more charred remains, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Saturday, September 13.

According to PCG Spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, the additional remains will be transported by the BRP Cape Engaño (MRRV-4411).

Authorities also recovered a coffin containing human remains and the remains of a dog aboard the vessel. The PNP Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) confirmed the retrieval of the dog, Cayabyab said.

The recovery of the 41 additional fatalities brought the total number of confirmed deaths from 35 to 76, while the number of survivors remained at 43.

Based on the vessel's ticket manifest, which listed 134 individuals, 13 people remain unaccounted for, while two individuals reportedly did not board the vessel.

Authorities said the figures may still change as recovery and identification operations continue.

The fire aboard MV June Aster broke out on Wednesday after survivors reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by smoke and flames. The blaze was declared out at around 10:15 a.m. Friday.

The vessel was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members.

Investigators are looking into possible discrepancies in the passenger manifest, cargo loading integrity, and the crew's emergency response protocols.

Atienza Interisland Ferries, the vessel's operator, has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
