At least four people have been reported dead, while three others were injured following the onslaught of Tropical Storm Basyang.
In a report by RH Edniel Parrosa, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said all reported casualties were from a single landslide incident in Cagayan de Oro City.
According to OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo in an interview with DZRH News, among the fatalities were a married couple, an infant, and another individual whose identity has yet to be confirmed.
The victims were among an estimated 30,000 people affected in Region 10, while more than 100,000 individuals were reported affected in the Caraga Region.
Initial assessments by the OCD indicated that intense flooding caused by up to 200 millimeters of rainfall was the most damaging impact of the storm, particularly in parts of Eastern Mindanao, including Iligan City.
Castillo said multiple flooding incidents were reported in Cagayan de Oro, although floodwaters subsided quickly.
"Ang flooding incidence na reported ay may multiple areas in Cagayan De Oro, pero mabilis lang daw kasing nag-subside ito. 'Yung sa lligan City naman ang initial report ay 14 barangays na reported flooding na may mga nagpa-rescue raw... although wala akong hawak na data kung nag-subside na ito," Castillo said during an interview on DZRH News.
Tropical Storm Basyang was last spotted over the coastal waters of Malimono, Surigao del Norte, after making landfall in Agusan del Norte on the evening of Thursday, February 5, weather authorities reported.
Aside from the effects of Basyang, a shear line—the interaction of warm and cold air masses—also affected parts of the Visayas, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall over several areas.
